About

About

Temple Israel is one of New England’s oldest synagogues.

Our congregation, founded in 1905, embraces contemporary values including egalitarianism, diversity, accessibility and inclusion. A USCJ-affiliated Conservative congregation, Temple Israel is the Jewish home for people of many backgrounds, ages, and levels of observance in the Seacoast region, including man interfaith families. Singing is an integral part of our worship services. All of our services follow a hybrid model of in-person and Zoom access.

We are made up of about 300 member families, who live within a 20-mile radius of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We operate a vibrant preschool and religious school for grades K-7, which meets on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Monthly educational and social events for teens complete our youth programming.

The Temple Israel community joins together for holiday celebrations, adult education classes, PJ Library and related activities, youth group programs, art exhibits and related workshops, films, talks, concerts, book club, and tikkun olam (healing the world) projects with the wider community.
