Sermon for Kol Nidre,

We have choices. Our lives are a series of choices that have brought us all individually and collectively to this moment. Brukhim Habaim-Welcome to this moment! In our foundational origin story, when Adam and Chava eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the world of conscious choice is set in motion. The story of human agency upon the earth begins. Torah opens with this image of choice and closes five books later with this refrain from Moses: I put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life, so that you and your children may live. (Deut. 30:19)

"Come Together"

Sermon for Yom Kippur,

I want to take you back to the moment in the Torah just before the ten commandments are uttered. At this moment the Israelites are gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai. A thick cloud descends upon the mountain. The mountain is quaking, and smoke rises from its core. The people are terrified. And the text states:  the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was. (Ex. 20:18)

Temple Israel will not be offering a formal break-the-fast this year. A few snacks will be offered at the close of services.

Annual High Holiday Food Drive - Erev Yom Kippur

On Erev Yom Kippur, we will dedicate our annual food collection to Seacoast Family Promise.

SFP is a neighbor helping neighbor organization for families with children experiencing homelessness. Please consider filling a bag (or two!) to help. Non-perishable items only may be left in the Sanctuary Lobby (State Street) between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Due to Covid 19, congregants can choose to send a check to: SFP – 27 Hampton Rd, Exeter, NH 03833. Please include Temple Israel Member in the memo line of the check.

Items requested:

  • Canned tuna
  • Individually wrapped snacks such as cookies, Cheese-its, Fig Newtons, fruit gummies, Goldfish, etc.
  • Boxed mac & cheese
  • Pancake Syrup and/or Pancake Mix
  • Special K cereal and/or Honey Nut Cheerios
  • Coffee filters
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Liquid laundry detergent: Please no pods
