Temple Israel is a founding partner in Seacoast Family Promise, a program for families experiencing homelessness that relies on a network of about two dozen local faith communities to provide meals and overnight support. Volunteers prepare and serve meals or stay overnight, while giving their friendship to families rebuilding their lives to achieve stable housing and employment.
Temple Israel volunteers partner with those from First United Methodist Church on Miller Ave. in Portsmouth.
When it is our week (5 or 6 weeks during the year), we cook and serve dinner. A volunteer would sign up for one night during that week. The time commitment is shopping and cooking the food, either at home or in the church, and then serving and cleaning up. It is a great way for families to “give back” together. Temple members also volunteer to sleep at the Methodist Church during the weeks we are partnered together.
