Candles are added to the menorah from right to left. The candles are lit from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. (On the Shabbat Chanukkah, the Chanukkah lights are lit first and then the Shabbat candles.)
Light the shamash (the helper candle) first, using it to kindle the rest of the candles. Before lighting the candles say or sing:
It is customary to recite this blessing before lighting the candles:
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kideshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Chanukah.
Praised are You God, Source of Life, who makes us holy through your commandments and teaches us to light the Chanukah candles.
It is customary to recite this blessing while lighting the candles:
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, she’asah nisim la’avoteynu bayamim ha’hem bazman ha’zeh.
Praised are You God, Source of Life, who performed miracles for our ancestors in their day and in out times.
It is customary to recite this blessing on the first night only:
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, she-asah nisim laavoteinu bayamim hahaeim baz’man hazeh.
Praised are You God, Source of Life, who keeps us alive, sustains us, and brings us to this moment.
After lighting the Chanukah candles:
Maoz tzur y’shuati
Rock of Ages let our song, praise Your saving power;
You amidst the raging foes, was our sheltering tower.
Furiously they assailed us, But Your arm availed us
And Your word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.
