Make ‘Em Laugh: Gesher Explores Jewish Comedy in America

What better time for the Gesher-ites to learn about Jewish comedy than on Purim! On Sunday, March 20 from 12:30-2 pm, Norman H. Finkelstein will present, “Funny Jews: The Shaping of American Comedy.” The session will focus on comedi- ans from the Vaudeville stage and silent films, to radio and tv, and even YouTube.

Finkelstein is the award-winning author of eighteen nonfiction books, mainly for young readers. In 2010, Finkelstein published Jewish Comedy Stars which includes 40+ short biographies of Jewish comedians who heavily influenced the entertainment industry in the 20th and 21st centuries. A retired public school librarian, he continues into his third decade of teaching at the Prozdor Department of Hebrew College.

In February, Gesher-ites enjoyed a thought-provoking presentation and discus- sion led by Rabbi Krieger. They now know what an MOT is! Thank you, Rabbi Krieger.

Gesher, the monthly program for our Jewish teens is open to students in Grades 8-12. It’s fun, hands-on learning with discussions, games, challenges, multi-media presentations, and lunch. We encourage students to attend this program even if they haven’t attended an earlier session! For more info, contact Beth Salzman, 778-4776 or Alissa Jacobs, 431-1397.
